This is a tutorial for beginners only; people who know the basics already
shouln't bother reading this.
It concentrates on two tools: Vegas and Fraps.
You can use other tools as well; there are many around and they all
follow one concept usually. To Follow this tutorial you need Vegas and Fraps although.

Make your own movie in 6 steps.

You can download a copy of fraps here:
http://www.fraps.com/download.php
To get rid of watermarks you have to purchase it.

A free trial of vegas is downloadable here:
http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp
Because of the high price you should consider to buy an older version
at ebay. I am using vegas 4.0, which i purchased for a good price there.
You really don't need the newest version. Newer version are even more complex and are confusing for beginners.

1. Fraps Settings
First of all you have to setup your fraps settings:

Start Fraps and go to "Movies". Now define a capture key e.g. "END" (you will have to press this key to start recording) and make sure "15 FPS" is checked. If you want to change the default folder where your movies are saved in, then do so.

You should also define an overlay corner under the "FPS" menu.

Go ahead, start your game and fraps some stuff now , if its pvp, pve it doesn't matter.

2. Vegas New Project
Ok you got your first fraps now.
Start Vegas:

Its a very complex programm but try to understand it slowly.

Go to "File" -> "New Project"
A window will open:

Width and height should be the same as your ingame solution.
I recommend to fraps at 1024*768 only; it's the best for fraps.
Fps should be the same as your fraps: 15.

3. Import Media
"File" -> "Import Media"
Go to the folder where you have saved your fraps into.

Drag the file under media pool to the timeline.

Redo the same with a sound file of your choice!
It should fit to your fraps somehow but don't bother if you can't find a
good one. Try to listen to some radio stations out there and write all
tracks down that might fit.

You should have something like this now:

4. Insert Text Media
Right Click on the video line (don't click on your .avi)
like here:

A window will open automatically:
Change the default text to something that descripes your fraps.
This is going to be your introduction scene.

Make sure it is at the very beginning of your video line:

You should be able to see your text on a black background in the preview window. This preview window is very small thou and will not show the full scene.
Press on the small line of the Preview WIndow:

and drag it away. It will be a single window now, thats not integrated.

Press ALT+6 to hide/show it. We are going to need that later.
But for now hide the window.

5. Create some Fade-Ins
Lets create a nice fade-in for our fraps:
It is easy, just press on one of the upper corner of an event (e.g. avi, text media or sound files) and drag your mouse to the left or the right. It depends on the corner. If it's a right corner drag the mouse to the left to create a fade out; if it's a left corner drag the mouse to the right to create a fade-in. You can also define the fade-in/out type by right-clicking on the fade in, but just try it for yourself.

Create some fade-ins/fade-outs for your video/sound files.

Press CTRL+HOME (leftarrow) to move to the beginning of your timeline.
Now we need the preview window again, press ALT + 6.
Press Space to play your first movie.
It is important that you check this preview window from time to time
so you can see the result .

5. Cutting
Ok one of the most important things is to cut your scenes.
You have to cut out all scenes you don't want to show.
Don't cut too much at the beginning but you will hopefully find out soon when it's necessary to cut scenes and when it's not.

To cut scenes select your avi file in the timeline and
move the selection line (flashing black/white line) to the beginning
of the scene you want to cut out and pres "s".

Do the same with your sound file, but don't start a new sound file every time a new scene begins; that's not necessary.

Delete the scenes you dont like.

6. Rendering
Ok you are done with your editing ? Lets finish it !
One of the most important step: Rendering.
Try to make your movie the smallest possible but remain a good quality.
To achieve this you need a good codec. A lot of people use divX for that but personally i prefer Windows Media Player Codecs.
Downloadable here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ecdownload.aspx

"File" -> "Render as"

Choose "Windows Media Video V9" as your coded and click on "custom"

Here are some good settings for your fraps:

But try your own settings and find a middle way between size and quality.

FPS and solution still depend on your ingame solution and the fps of your fraps file although, i recommend to change the quality and format settings only.

Audio settings are less important but it's same here you got to find a middle way between size and quality. Sound is very important thing in your movie because it will influence the viewer's impression a lot.

DONE
I hope this can help out some people.
If you got any question feel free to post here
